About

Find a Doula is an independent membership platform for the United States and Canada that helps individuals and families discover and connect with end-of-life doulas, organizations, and related support services.

Our aim is to make it easier to understand what support is available, explore different approaches, and contact people who may be able to help.

Find a Doula does not provide care directly. Practitioners and organizations on the platform work independently, and their services, availability, fees, and ways of working vary.

Why Find a Doula Was Created

Finding support at the end of life can be difficult, particularly when you are also dealing with illness, uncertainty, or the needs of someone close to you.

Find a Doula was created by Henry Goodlock, an independent software developer from Gloucestershire, after his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

While looking for support for his father and family, Henry found it difficult to understand what help was available and where to find it. At the time, he had never heard of end-of-life doulas. Looking back, he believes that this kind of support could have made a meaningful difference to his father and those around him.

That experience inspired Find a Doula: a platform where people can explore end-of-life support and make contact with practitioners and organizations directly.

Henry is not an end-of-life doula. His role is to develop and maintain the platform, helping people find information and connections that may be useful to them.

How the Platform Is Funded

Find a Doula is funded entirely by membership fees paid by doulas. These fees support the running and development of the platform.

We do not carry advertisements, sell products, or receive donations.

Membership of Find a Doula is separate from any arrangement you make with a practitioner. Any support, fees, and terms should be discussed and agreed directly with the practitioner or organization concerned.

Paying for membership is not, in itself, evidence of a doula’s qualifications, experience, or suitability for your needs.

What You Can Find Here

The platform brings together people and organizations involved in different aspects of end-of-life support. You can use it to:

  • Search for end-of-life doulas and support services across the United States and Canada
  • Explore members’ backgrounds, approaches, and services
  • Find organizations, training providers, and community groups
  • Compare locations and areas covered
  • Contact practitioners and organizations through their profiles

You might be planning ahead, living with a life-limiting illness, supporting someone who is dying, or looking for help for your family. You can explore profiles at your own pace and decide whether any of the support offered feels appropriate for your circumstances.

Understanding End-of-Life Doula Support

An end-of-life doula, sometimes called a death doula, offers non-medical support to people preparing for death and to those close to them.

Depending on the individual doula’s experience and services, this may include companionship, practical preparation, emotional support, or help exploring and communicating personal wishes.

Doula support is optional and can sit alongside care from health and social care professionals, hospices, family, friends, and community services. The doula role does not replace medical care, nursing, professional counselling, or legal advice.

Our Information for Everyone page explains more about using the platform, understanding profiles, and the questions you may want to ask before choosing a doula.

Independence and Your Choice

Find a Doula is not owned or operated by a training provider, membership organization for the doula profession, or care provider. It is independently run and brings together members with different backgrounds, training, and approaches.

We aim to help you explore those differences and make your own choice. Membership of the platform does not mean that a practitioner or organization is suitable for every person or situation.

The platform represents its members and should not be treated as a complete list of all available end-of-life support. Your GP, care team, local hospice, and community organizations may be able to tell you about other options.

You are encouraged to ask questions, discuss your needs, and take time before agreeing to any support.

Profiles, Verification, and Responsibility

Practitioners and organizations create their own profiles and describe their own services. The platform includes members with different levels of experience, including doulas in training and members whose details have not been independently verified.

A profile does not mean that every statement it contains has been checked. Where verification is displayed, it is important to understand what that verification covers. It should not be taken as a guarantee of the quality of a service or its suitability for your needs.

Before arranging support, you can ask about training, relevant experience, professional memberships, insurance, fees, and how concerns or complaints are handled. Where appropriate, you can check qualifications or membership claims with the organization named.

Read Our Principles for more about our approach to verification, member standards, and responsible representation.

For Doulas and Organizations

Find a Doula gives people and organizations working in end-of-life support a place to explain their work and help others understand what they offer.

Individual members can describe their experience, training, services, and areas covered. Organizations can share information about their support services, training, or community work. Where relevant, members can link their profiles to organizations they are connected with.

Clear and accurate profiles help visitors understand their options and have informed conversations before making a decision.

Our Aim

We want to make finding end-of-life support less confusing and help people feel better informed about the choices available to them.

Whether you are preparing for your own future or supporting someone close to you, we hope Find a Doula helps you find useful connections and support that respects your needs, wishes, and circumstances.
